Early Life and Background
Kalpana Chawla was born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, India. From a young age, she displayed a keen interest in science and aviation. Growing up in a supportive environment, her parents encouraged her to pursue her dreams. She attended Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School in Karnal, where her academic excellence shone through, laying the foundation for her future endeavors.
Kalpana Chawla joined NASA's astronaut corps in March 1995 and was selected for her first space flight in 1996. She famously said while experiencing weightlessness, "You are just your intelligence." Over her career, she traveled 10.67 million kilometers, completing 252 orbits around Earth. Her inaugural mission began on November 19, 1997, as part of the six-member crew aboard Space Shuttle Columbia for flight STS-87. Kalpana made history as the first Indian-born woman and the second Indian person to go to space, following cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma, who flew in 1984. During her first mission, she traveled over 10.4 million kilometers. Kalpana Chawla's remarkable achievements continue to inspire future generations of astronauts and scientists.

Education and Career Path
Chawla's journey in the field of aeronautics began after she completed her bachelor's degree in engineering in Aeronautics from Punjab Engineering College. She then moved to the United States to further her studies. Kalpana earned a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington and later received her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Boulder. Her passion for aeronautics led her to work at NASA, where she joined the astronaut corps in March 1995, marking a significant step in her illustrious career.

Historic Space Flights
Kalpana Chawla made history in 1997 by becoming the first Indian American astronaut and the first Indian woman in space. She flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia as a mission specialist, marking a monumental achievement not only for herself but also for her country. Chawla's dedication to her profession and her contributions to space exploration paved the way for future generations of women in science and technology. Sadly, her second flight on the Space Shuttle Columbia ended in tragedy on February 1, 2003, when the spacecraft disintegrated during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in the loss of all seven crew members, including Chawla.
